The main advantage of license-free 2.4 GHz and 5GHz radios is their low cost. These radios also don`t require an ACMA frequency license.

However, as the class-licensed frequencies are shared resources, their use in high density areas can be affected by congestion and interference from other users.

While more expensive than class-licensed radios, licensed 6-38 GHz microwave radio equipment offers greater levels of availability and reliability. Holding an ACMA frequency license guarantees interference-free operation. These factors mean licensed radios are ideal for mission critical links.

Licensed microwave radios also provide faster data speeds, and can achieve long link distances of several tens of kilometres.

License-free 24 GHz radios are a midpoint between licensed and class-licensed radios. These radios provide the same high throughput rates and functionality as licensed equipment, however, their use doesn`t require a frequency license. 

24 GHz license-free links are well-suited for short distances (up to 2.5km) in high density areas where the cost of license fees is high. 

Risk of interference is low with 24 GHz due to the strict ACMA limits on power (maximum EIRP is only 100mW) and limited use of the frequency by other devices.

Millimetre wave radios don`t require a frequency license and provide very high data speeds of up to 1.25 Gbps. These radios provide high availability levels for link distances of up to 1 km.
